Description: Circa 1900 Bluff Gaijin Settlement Yokohama Broadside RARE and Important This is a rare broadside from Yokohama's foreign 'settlement' days. It measures approximately 5 1/4" x 6 3/4" and shows signs of wear, including chips, creases, and tape on the reverse center. The paper is heavy stock. This broadside lists fares for "Jinrikisha for single passenger in the Settlement", "Bluff Rates from Grand Hotel and Down Town", Railway Time Tables" for Yokohama, Tokyo, and Kamakura. Although it was called Yokohama Station back then, that was actually a train station in Sakuragicho. The "American Ladies of Yokohama" refers to a group of expatriate women who were part of the foreign community in Yokohama, Japan. This community played a significant role in the social and cultural life of Yokohama, which was one of the most important international ports in Japan during that period. The "American Ladies of Yokohama" were part of a broader network of foreign residents who helped establish and maintain Western-style social and cultural practices in the city. They also played a role in supporting educational and religious initiatives, often working with churches and schools. Although not similar, the only comparable item I could find is from the UCSB Library, East Asian Collections, where it is described as: American Ladies of Yokohama. Broadside, welcoming 'our brave Volunteers...' and inviting them to the organization’s headquarters and the Seaman’s Mission Reading Room, where 'Ladies will be in attendance to give full information regarding objects of interest in the vicinity of Yokohama and Tokyo,' ca. 1900-1910. (Wyles SC 752). This document is likely one of the few surviving pieces and is a rare find. It would look wonderful framed and displayed!
