About Chinese Gordon (Major General Charles George Gordon):"Chinese Gordon" refers to Major General Charles George Gordon, a British Army officer and administrator who gained fame for his military service in China during the 19th century. He earned the nickname "Chinese Gordon" for his role in the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion, a massive civil war in southern China from 1850 to 1864. Gordon was appointed to command the "Ever Victorious Army," a force composed mainly of Chinese soldiers but led by European officers. Under his leadership, the army played a crucial role in defeating the Taiping rebels, particularly during the recapture of the city of Suzhou in 1863. His effective command and moral integrity earned him great respect in both China and Britain. Gordon is also well-known for his later role in the defense of Khartoum during the Mahdist War in Sudan. He was sent by the British government to evacuate Egyptian forces from Sudan but instead chose to stay and defend the city of Khartoum against the Mahdist forces. Tragically, he was killed when the city fell in January 1885, just days before a British relief expedition arrived. His death turned him into a national hero in Britain, symbolizing courage, duty, and sacrifice. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc. The photos and text in this listing are copyrighted.
