Description: Dome measures approximately 6 1/8 inches across and 7 inches tall.Marble base measures approximately 7 1/2 inches wide and 3/4 inches thick. This antique glass cheese dome has a beautiful etched image of the famous and beautiful Horticultural Building from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. This famous event is also known as The Chicago World’s Fair and The Chicago Columbian Exposition. This piece was most likely a souvenir purchased while visiting the fair.Clear glass dome has a beautiful faceted knob handle. The marble base does have newer screws and rubber pads. We suspect that the pads on the underside of the marble as well as the screws are a later replacement piece. It is also possible that the entire marble base is replacement and did not start life with the dome. The marble base, however, fits the dome nicely and displays well. The dome is in fantastic shape for its age.Very light surface wear. A few tiny bubbles and/ or flea bites are along the rim but are not visible while the dome sits in the plate.A little more information on the Horticultural Building:The Horticultural Building was one of the major exhibition halls of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Serving as a showcase of trees and flowers, the building stretched nearly 1,000 feet long and was topped by a glass dome 114 feet high. The Venetian Renaissance greenhouse was co-designed by WIlliam Le Baron Jenney, the Chicago architect often called "the father of the skyscraper." The building rose on the west side of Jackson Park, facing a lagoon and the park's Wooded Island.Item will be double boxed for shipping for safe arrival to the new buyer.
