Description: Chattanooga is an anti-slavery novel written and published by abolitionist lawyer, John Joliffe, in Cincinnati in 1858. His name does not appear on the title page. Joliffe’s career focused on defending escaped black men and women who crossed from Kentucky into Ohio over any other cases he handled. Joliffe worked to fight slavery in some instances with future Chief Justice of the United States, Salmon P. Chase. This copy of Chattanooga is bound in one quarter leather. The spine has imprinted five decorative shapes colored gold and pressed into the leather. The title is pressed vertically into the leather at the half-way point in small type. This book was leather bound, but the binding date is not known. However, the binding is in fine condition, with no sign of wear. The novel is in superb condition for its age. Pages have virtually no foxing. Hinge and text block are near fine and joints are like new. Overall, a book in fine condition, bound very well, and the book’s pages are surprisingly strong and readable with little fear of damage being caused.
