Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) CHATSWORTH HOUSE. This favourite residence of the Dukes of Devonshire is near Rowsley Station, a little way up the Valley of the Derwent, which runs through the park and is crossed by a stone bridge. The present mansion was commenced by the fourth Earl and first Duke, and comprises four nearly equal fronts or sides enclosing a quadrangle. It is open to the public whenever the Duke is not residing there, and contains some beautiful wood-carving, often attributed to Gibbons, but most of which is really by a local artist, Samuel Watson. The gardens are also famous; and still more so is the conservatory, which covers an acre, and was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, then plain head gardener to the Duke; it afterwards became the model of the Crystal Palace. Mary Queen of Scots was confined at Chatsworth for twelve years.
