Description: Charley is a contemporary art publication series edited by Maurizio Cattelan, Massimiliano Gioni, Ali Suborn ick, and designed by The Purtill Family Business. The new volume of this independent series brings together the stray dogs of contemporary art: Charley 05 features artists that have remained isolated, forgotten, proudly secluded or slightly unnoticed, in spite of their visionary work. Mixing professionals and amateurs, cult figures and unknowns, Charley 05 composes a gallery of obsessions. It collects the art of unheard prophets, voluntary outcasts, great solitary masters and freaks. Celebrating the extreme subjectivity of nearly 100 artists, Charley 05 questions accepted hierarchies by insinuating new, infective doubts. A multiform creature, Charley is bound to transform at each new appearance. The first volume featured 400 emerging artists from around the world, selected by a pool of international artists, curators, critics and art professionals. Charley 02 provided a snapshot of the New York City art season in 2001-2002. Charley 03 looked back in angora to the art of the 80s and 90s. The 4th issue, Checkpoint Charley, was born out of the research conducted by the curators of the 4th berlin biennial for contemporary art (2006) and brought together images of works produced by more than 700 artists. Charley 05 looks at the periphery, or maybe just sideways, trying to escape from the center.
