CHARLESTON SOUTH CAROLINA CASTLE PINCKNEY GARRISON FLAG RECEIPT 1832

Description: Castle Pickney was a brick fort built in Charleston Harbor to provide protection during the War of 1812, and later used as a prisoner of War camp during the American Civil War but is best remembered during the Nullification Crisis of 1832 when, after John C Calhoun and the State of South Carolina attempted to leave the Union, President Andrew Jackson, a powerful advocate of the Federal Union, in October, 1832 ordered the Secretary of War to fully occupy and re-provision the posts surrounding Charleston, including Castle Pinckney. An Original US Army receipt issued at Castle Pinckney, November 3, 1832 for receipt of a Garrison Flag, signed by Captain Henry Saunders, 1st Artillery. Captain Saunders, a Virginian and a veteran of the War of 1812 commanded the post at Pinckney during the Crisis of 1832. 1p 8 x 3" ink,.
