Description: CHARLES KNIGHT [EDITOR]. VIRTUE'S IMPERIAL SHAKSPERE [SHAKESPEARE] – WILLIAM SHAKSPERE: A BIOGRAPHY. London: Virtue & Co. SUBSCRIBERS' EDITION. No date. c. 1875. 188 pages. 5 FULL PAGE STEEL ENGRAVINGS WITH TISSUE GUARDS. Large folio size (15 by 11 inch) heavy cardcovers with cloth tape to spine. Some light soiling & wear to covers, someone wrote "Biography" front in fountain pen, some very slight separations in the gutter (especially between the engravings & the text), but all signatures sewn & holding just fine & overall solid & GOOD CONDITION. This was one volume of, it would appear, eight in total. It contains an extensive Biography of Shakespeare by Charles Knight, and may have been either the first or the last volume of the set (I believe the first). Knight is quoted at rear reading: "This is a new edition, with large alterations and additional matter, grounded upon more recent information, of a volume published in 1843." The book mentions the death of Knight as apparently a recent event. He died in 1873, so this edition can be tentatively placed at about 1875. The five large (8 by 10 inch) steel engravings, printed on heavy stock paper, are a sight to behold in person. They are incredibly detailed and a superb example of the 19th-century engravers' art at its best. TITLES ON THE ENGRAVINGS: • I.) TIMON AND APEMANTUS (FROM TIMON OF ATHENS). • II.) THE NINE WORTHIES (FROM LOVE'S LABOURS LOST). • III.) THE WOOING OF HENRY V (FROM KING HENRY V). • IV.) MACBETH (FROM MACBETH). • V.) VOLUMNIA REPROACHING BRUTUS AND SICINIUS (FROM CORIOLANUS).
