The story begins with the birth of his son, also named Paul, and the death of his wife shortly after childbirth. Dombey neglects his daughter, Florence, because she is not the son he desired. As the story progresses, young Paul is sent to a boarding school but his health deteriorates, leading to his untimely death. This shatters Mr. Dombey’s dreams. Florence, who has always been neglected, finds solace in Walter Gay, an employee of her father’s firm. The novel delves into themes of family dynamics, pride, and redemption, ultimately showing Mr. Dombey’s journey from arrogance to reconciliation with his daughter. Hablot Knight Browne, known by his pen name Phiz, was a renowned British artist and illustrator born on July 10, 1815. He is best known for his work with Charles Dickens, illustrating many of Dickens’ novels, including “Dombey and Son,” “David Copperfield,” “Bleak House,” and "Martin Chuzzlewit". The illustrations in the library edition of “Dombey and Son were originally published in monthly parts from October 1846 to April 1848. Phiz’s illustrations are celebrated for their detailed and expressive style, which brought Dickens’ characters and scenes to life. His collaboration with Dickens began with “The Pickwick Papers” after the original illustrator, Robert Seymour, passed away. Phiz’s work was instrumental in shaping the visual world of Dickens’ stories, making them even more engaging for readers. The W.L. Allison company succeeded T. Many of the Allison publications came under the control of the United States Book Company when it was organized in 1890. (Shove; Tebbel).
