Description: CHARLES CONDER (1868-1909, British/Australian) Elegant ladies at the beach Original 1898 chromolithograph, from a watercolour painting on silk. published in "The Studio" Magazine in the 1898. A fine quality and delicate lithograph, produced from the original artwork which Conder would have submitted to the editor Charles Holme for inclusion to showcase his work as a Supplement. An ingenious piece of lithography from a silk original, with lovely muted yet vibrant colours. Conder was a globe-trotting bohemian, with an amazing hedonistic life story - well worth looking up. Born in UK, childhood spent in India, secondary educated in UK, then emigrated to Australia where he became famous for his art (and may have become an Australian citizen?) then moved to France where he became influenced by Impressionism and knew Toulouse-Lautrec. He met Aubrey Beardsley in Dieppe in 1895, by which time Conder was famously painting on silk. It is thought that the item on offer stems from his time on the French coast in the mid-1890s. His style incorporates elements of Impressionism and the latest trends in Art Nouveau. Unsigned, but a cast-iron solid attribution - see the inscribed original tissue guard which is included in the sale to further validate the item.. Excellent condition. Importantly, the blindstamp of "The Studio" is at lower right, beneath the image. Main image area measures 5 x 5.75 inches with wide and adequate margins beyond. Published by "The Studio" magazine 1898. Hence "lifetime". The Studio was a lavishly-produced, prestigious quarterly festschrift of art, to which leading and promising artists offered examples of their work. Some were commissions from the editor, too. Whistler, Beardsley, Waterhouse, Vallotton are just a few of the artists whose original graphic work was featured. The publication took lithography to new heights in the 1890s, producing superb quality images. It was a vital showcase for the work of graphic artists, who had very little opportunity to display their work in the mainstream exhibitions which were dominated by oil painters. Printed on wove art paper. Unframed.
