Description: This item is exceedingly rare. The Large Hadron Collider is the most complex machine ever built, and we have never seen an actual part of it available for purchase anywhere—ever—in over a decade of science artifact collecting. It makes a perfect gift for the avid science collector, or the person who has everything. Museums, universities, and private collectors are invited to make offers. ABOUT THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) between 1998 and 2008 in collaboration with over 10,000 scientists and hundreds of universities and laboratories across more than 100 countries. It lies in a tunnel 27 km (17 mi) in circumference and as deep as 175 m (574 ft) beneath the France–Switzerland border near Geneva. ABOUT THE CABLE: The Large Hadron Collider magnets are superconductive (low electrical resistance achieved at extremely low temperatures below -263 °C.) The cables connecting the magnets are critical to maintain superconductivity throughout the system. Each cable contains 231,336 filaments of superconducting alloy Niobium-titanium (NbTi). This superconducting cable is thirty six stranded and roll formed by special equipment and technology in a cuneal cross section with a width of 15.1 millimeters and an average thickness of 1.48 millimeter strands. Each strand contains 6,426 twisted niobium-titanium filaments with a diameter of 6-micrometers embedded in an oxygen free copper matrix. Each filament is about 0.006 mm thick, i.e. 10 times thinner than a normal human hair. Around each filament there is a 0.0005 mm layer of high-purity copper. Total superconducting cable required for the LHC is around 7600 km (the total length of filaments is stretches 5 times to the sun and back with enough left over for a few trips to the moon). ITEM PROVENANCE: This cable was part of the original construction of the collider, and functioned for about 5 years before it was replaced during Long Shutdown 1. This item was gifted directly from CERN to a VIP in 2015. A certificate of authenticity is included. PRESENTATION: The cable is stored in a custom built, padded display box made of oak wood with a glass lid and two locks. The box is heavy duty, and museum quality. Cable Dimensions: 1.51 cm x ??? cm (?? in x ?? in)Display Dimensions: ??? cm x ??? cm (?? in x ??in) It is to be shipped in an insured wooden crate. Buyers will remain anonymous (private listing).
