Description: A glazed ceramic tea bowl (chawan) by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). The hand-built form shows slight irregularity and is covered with a brilliant glaze in striking flaming red with inclusion of white matrix and occasional marks of yellow-brown and black specks. The interior is glazed in a similar mottled matrix of red and white. The base is glazed red and carved with the artist's insignia. The glaze is glossy and striking. Red color glaze is relatively rare in the repertoire of Toshiko Takaezu's works, making this unique tea bowl a highly collectible example. The bowl is a gift to the previous owner circa 1992. The artist's work was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics. The red glaze on this bowl evokes the association of the Peach Bloom glaze from imperial Langyao (Lang Kiln) during the Chinese Qing Dynasty.Height: 2.8 in (7.12 cm)Width: 4.75 in (12.07 cm)Depth: 4.275 in (10.86 cm)
