The town of Yale was founded in 1860 by the Yale brothers, who were lumbermen from New York. The brothers bought 160 acres of land and began clearing the forest for lumber. They built several sawmills and established a thriving lumber industry in the area. The town slowly grew around these mills, and by the end of the 19th century, Yale had become a bustling town with several industries. Early on, "The Great THUMB FIRE" of 1871 quickly spread across regional and this county, eventually reached Yale. The fire destroyed several buildings in Yale, including the sawmills, the main employers that the town depended on. The fire had a significant impact on the town's economy, and it took several years for the town to recover from the damage. The second Great Michigan Thumb fire in 1881 also affected much of the town, just ten years after the first “Great Thumb” fire of 1871.
