Sugar Skull Barro Negro Black Clay Pottery Signed Handmade Mexican Folk Art

Description: This is a lovely Sugar Skull made of black clay, Barro Negro, handmade and burnished to a brilliant shine. From San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, this black clay skull is hand formed to resemble Frida Kahlo and is amazing. On our most recent trip to Mexico, we had a lovely visit with Belem Juarez. Belem is the niece of the infamous Rosa Real Mateo de Nieto or Dona Rosa and has learned the centuries old craft of Barro Negro pottery from her aunt and family. Most black clay pottery is gray and has a matte finish. It was Belem's aunt Dona Rosa who discovered that if the black clay was burnished or rubbed with a quartz stone, just before firing, the clay became very compacted. Then, when firing at a low temp the clay turned black and looked very shiny. This Frida skull, handcrafted by Belem, is gorgeous and has a burnished shiny skull face, lightly burnished black clay traditional up-do style hair and large shiny tipped flowers on her head. The back of her head is also burnished with etched rows to mimic Frida's hair. Amazing hand carved details on her face: A Juan Diego rose, suns above her right eye, carved sunburst around her left eye, carved teeth and deep carved leaves on her chin. The bottom is signed by Belem. This Frida Kahlo skull is a lovely gift, 100% real authentic black clay and beautiful for a Day of the Dead collector.
