About 1,000 years ago, in the middle of the Heian period, a new style was born to replace ancient weapons and armor. A "Japanese sword" with a curve and a ridge, and a "large armor" suitable for cavalry battles. Until the Momoyama period (late 16th century to early 17th century), when battles were fought in Japan, swords and armor were honed through battles and evolved in line with practical use. From the period of the Northern and Southern Courts (14th century) onwards, instead of the heavy armor, light haramaki and domaru became the mainstream, and in the Momoyama period, Tosei armor appeared. Also, swords change their shape with the times. During the period of turmoil in the Northern and Southern Courts, large swords that were over 1m in length appeared, but during the Muromachi period, the easy-to-handle Uchigatana became popular.
