First published UK edition with "price four shillings" above the imprint and with the illustration on p. 34 showing Alice looking at the Cheshire Cat, not in profile, 4to (10.25 x 7.75 inches), pp. (12), (1), 2-56, (8), An Easter Greeting, Christmas Greeting, Works by Lewis Carroll, Specimen page, 20 color illustrations after John Tenniel, engraved and printed by Edmund Evans. The first printed edition of 10,000 copies, London: Macmillan and Co., 1889, was rejected by Carroll, who objected to the color printing. Carroll insisted that no copies be released in Great Britain but allowed four thousand of the original 10,000 copies to be sent to the United States and published there with a cancel title: New York: Macmillan and Co., 1890 (the first US edition). A second printed London Macmillan and Co., 1890 edition reflecting some change to the intensity of the chromolithography was then published (the first published UK edition). At least some of the original London Macmillan and Co., 1889 edition were later published after the London Macmillan and Co., 1890 edition sold out. White cloth backed original color pictorial boards designed by E. Gertrude Thomson with her facsimile signature on the upper side and her initials on the lower side. March Hare illustration on the lower side is not centered vertically. The boards are apparently the same as those on the original 1889 edition. Very good copy with worn edges and rounded corners, surface rubbing and light soil. Sheets very good+ with some age toning. No owner names or inscriptions. H10965All Items Are Sent Insured.
