Description: Carnac's Folly Gilbert Parker 1922. Carnac's Folly is a Canadian variant of the Victorian sensation novel genre published. . .in the 1920s? It sure doesn't seem like a 20th century book! Its quality is about on par with one of the lesser Wilkie Collins or Mary Elizabeth Braddon books. Carnac Grier is the son of a Canadian logging tycoon, but decides he'd rather have a career in the fine arts rather than managing the family business. He meets a suspicious French woman in New York named Luzanne, and is tricked into marrying her in a scheme worthy of Count Olaf of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Our protagonist isn't the only one with things to hide. There are secret murders and secret love affairs too. One character drops dead as soon as he hears a vague hint about one of these backstory complications. Carnac and other Canadians have mastered the powers of clairvoyance and physiognomy, because they can accurately analyze someone's personality based on dubious assumptions about their appearance. Luzanne looks like an "adventuress", an insult ripped from 1860s British novels. They say sensation novels went out of fashion late in the 19th century in Britain, but the genre must have lasted longer in Canada. Gilbert Parker was once one of the bestselling authors of the early 20th century, but has since fallen into obscurity. Perhaps I'll try one of his earlier novels, which are supposedly better than the ones he wrote since becoming a Tory politician.
