She attended the Hollywood Professional School and was introduced to the entertainment industry, initially on radio and providing voice-dubbing for animated shorts. She made her motion picture debut in "Wide Open Town" (1941) from the 'Hopalong Cassidy' series which starred William Boyd. She went on to appear in roles of substance in the films "Boomerang!" (1947), "The Girl Next Door" (1953), "Meet Me in Las Vegas" with Cyd Charisse & Dan Dailey (1956) and "The Helen Morgan Story" with Ann Blyth & Paul Newman (1957). She distinguished herself when she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film "The Defiant Ones" with Sidney Poitier & Tony Curtis (1958). During the 1950s, she began to appear regularly on TV co-starred in the series "Pete and Gladys" (1960 to 1962). She went on to star in her own series "The Cara Williams Show" (1964 to 1965). She was formerly married to actor John Drew Barrymore.
