The "Move of the Millennium" has been re-created in a very detailed sculpture by miniaturist Ron Spicer. In the summer of 1999, the Cape Hatteras Light Station - in danger of collapse from hurricane winds and unchecked beach erosion - was relocated one-half mile inland. This feat of engineering skill - moving a 208-foot-high, 4,400-ton tower nearly 2,900 feet - required the talents of hundreds of people, and 23 days to complete. But it saved America's best-known lighthouse from certain destruction.Shoreline erosion problems have plagued the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse since shortly after its construction. The lighthouse was built in 1870 1,600 feet from the ocean, but by 1919 the sea had advanced to within 300 feet of the structure. Over the years, they tried many solutions, but in 1989, they realized that a bold move needed to be done to save this historic structure. In 1999, through an elaborate track and hydraulic system, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was slowly and successfully moved to its new home -- 1600 feet from the ocean.This statue from Lenox commemorates this remarkable achievement - an event popularly referred to as "The Move of the Millennium." It is part of the Lighthouses of America Collection, measures about 13" wide. The sculpture is crafted of bonded porcelain and painted entirely by hand. We purchased this lighthouse after vacationing in OBX while the move was underway. For a lighthouse enthusiast, the move was an amazing feat and one to remember.
