With the reign of the frail, syphilis-ridden, half-mad Emperor Tiberius coming to an end, Prince Gaius Augustus Germanicus, aka Caligula, is summoned to the demented ruler's palace of sin on the island of Capri. After the murder of bedridden Tiberius, Caligula is proclaimed the new emperor, who, in turn, proclaims his beloved sister and lover, Julia Drusilla, as his equal, much to the disgust of the Roman Senate. Now, as a four-year reign of depravity and terror commences, allegiances turn into betrayal, virginities are destroyed, torture and execution weed out the competition, and dangerously megalomaniac Caligula declares himself a god. Can the Roman Empire tolerate the uncontrollable mania of the insane tyrant?"Caligula" is a movie that leaves you speechless. The presence of four very earnest thespians (McDowell, Gielgud, O'Toole and Mirren) is weird beyond comment: to my knowledge, it's the only overtly hardcore movie which features actors who have also played with great mainstream directors ...and Shakespeare on stage.Director Tinto Brass claimed that most of the sex scenes were added unbeknownst to him. Actually Tinto Brass's two more famous movies follow the same pattern: the notorious "Salon Kitty" which was released about two or three years before, was a pale imitation of Visconti's "la caditi dei degli" (1969),using two of the Italian master's actors ,Ingrid Thulin and Helmut Berger.and "Caligola" resembles "Fellini-Satyricon"(1969) ;had Fellini's work not existed, maybe one would have found in Brass's work some kind of originality.Of course McDowell is impressive: he was ideally cast as the emperor, but the scenes of orgy are overlong and are not suited for cine buffs ;tortures scenes repel - they were influenced by Pasolini's "Salo" (1975),but one feels none of the pain and despair of the murdered director.Caligula was the subject of one of Albert Camus's plays. If you cannot attend a performance, reading the book will reward you more than Brass's pornographic peplum.
