Large Miniature (see photo for more details). Here we have a rare and aesthetic specimen of cactus selenite from a discovery in 2007 on the west side of the Great Salt Lake in Utah. We found a small low lying area that had been flooded by water that overflowed earlier in the year from the Great Salt Lake. As the water evaporated selenite crystals precipitated out and coated the branches of varies small trees and bushes. The result was some very aesthetic specimens of selenite resembling in shape and form a miniature 'cacti' (hence the name 'cactus selenite')! The selenite crystals are well-formed and very sharp and range in color from basically white (colorless) to a light peach color (in this case the crystals are basically colorless). The crystals are small but mostly gemmy and lustrous. So far as I can tell this 'new' habit for selenite is unique to this small isolated area in Utah. Please note that we revisited the area in Late October of 2008 and the area had once again been flooded but this time the 'flood' essentially destroyed the selenite that had previously been there. So it looks like we have only the specimens that we had previously collected and there will most likely not be any new material in the future!
