You can direct sow these seeds after danger of frost or start them indoors 4-5 weeks before transplanting them into the garden. Red Acre cabbage is considered to be one of the best growing red cabbages. The cabbage heads average 6” – 7” in diameter. These cabbage heads can weigh up to 3 pounds each. This cabbage lasts long in the garden but also stores well. Red acre can be grown in large or small gardens. This variety takes up less space that some other varieties of cabbage. Red acre cabbage is resistant to cabbage yellowing. This cabbage is perfect for adding brilliant color to your favorite batch of coleslaw or added to your salad for additional vitamins & nutrients. Use this handy tip for preventing cut worms from getting to your cabbage. When you transplant your starts, place a 2-3” long section of a toilet paper or papertowel roll when you place them in the ground. Make sure that about ½ of the cardboard is above the soil level. This will prevent the cut worms from feasting on your baby plants.For companion planting: Plant with Beets, Celery, Chards, Cucumbers, Lettuce, Onions, Potatoes, and Spinach. Plant with Chamomile and Garlic to improve growth and flavor. Planting with Dill improves growth and health of the plant.
