Description: Cabaret (1972 film)8 OscarsSynopsisSally Bowles was an American singer who performed in the Kit Kat Klub cabaret in Berlin in the early 1930s. She rents a room from Brian, a reserved English academic and writer, who has just arrived in Berlin to write his philosophy thesis. Brian gives English lessons to earn a living while continuing his studies. Sally tries unsuccessfully to seduce him and initially thinks he is gay. They become friends and Brian witnesses Sally's chaotic life during the last days of the Weimar Republic. Brian and Sally soon become lovers.A wealthy playboy, Max (Maximilian von Heune), takes a liking to them. He invites them to the best restaurants, covers Sally with sumptuous gifts (including a fur coat), and invites them to a castle. This attractive aristocrat assures Brian that Germany will keep the Nazis under control, brutes in his eyes, but who will have the advantage of ridding the country of communists. Max seduces Sally and Brian, then abandons them, leaving Sally pregnant without her knowing who the father is. Brian proposes marriage to Sally and a life as an academic at Cambridge. Sally realizes that she will never be able to lead such a quiet life. She leaves him after having an abortion. The film ends with Brian leaving for England, while Sally continues her life in Berlin. The Kit Kat Klub's emcee is still shown in his role as showman, announcing, with knowing winks to the camera, that the party will soon be over.In a subplot, Fritz, a penniless student of Brian's, wants to seduce a wealthy Jewish heiress, Natalia. But he realizes that he is falling in love with the young girl. The latter loves him too, but being Jewish in a Germany where Nazism is on the rise, she rejects their union as impossible after he asks her to marry him. Fritz was actually a Jew who had passed himself off as a Protestant in order to escape anti-Semitism. He eventually confesses this to Natalia, and the young people get married in the synagogue. We are left in doubt as to what their fate will be.The escalation of Nazi violence is shown several times in the film. In the cabaret, whose songs and dances punctuate the film - with or without Sally Bowles - the rise of National Socialism appears in the background, notably in the final piece a reflection of the room, where we see several men in Nazi uniform, displaying the swastika.
