Description: Archive of Irene Smallwood Bowen (1861-1954, Atlanta), Smallwood attended Hampton Institute in VA and married JWE Bowen Sr., who was the first Black president of the Gammon Theological Seminary in Atlanta. Smallwood was a contemporary of Mary McLeod Bethune and Lucy Craft Laney as educators at Haines Institute in Augusta, GA. Smallwood attended the Buffalo Free Kindergarten Association (Elmwood School) in the late 1800s, she started the kindergarten program at Haines Institute (Augusta, GA), the first black kindergarten in the US. A small collection of ephemera, including newspaper clippings, invitations, school accomplishments, plus a manuscript list of silverware by Miss Smallwood. Collection includes 1 handmade / embroidered booklet housing the items 1 small black and white snapshot of Smallwood, creased 2 commencement programs for Buffalo (NY) Free Kindergarten Association dated June 3, 1893. One of the program is torn horizontally 1 certification that Irene Smallwood has completed 8 lessons in serving at the Hampton Summer Normal, dated July 28, 1898 and SIGNED by Dora Freeman 2 invitations to a reception at Gammons Theological Seminary, Magnolia Cottage, Atlanta. Presumably this was at the home of the Bowens when he was President at Gammon. Dated May 24, no year A single legal size sheet of paper, with handwritten list of silverware owned by Smallwood Bowen, writing on front and partially on back 16 clippings from newspapers, mostly poetry but there are 2 articles about Kindergarten, one specifically the work of Smallwood at Haines Institute in Augusta.
