Description: Original ca 1890s cabinet photo of a wooden building serving as business for tinsmith Joseph Benoit, At least six people are posing in front of the store and, possibly, their home, and appear to represent three generations of the family and some of his store’s wares can be seen on the porch. Photo is approximately 5 x 8", we have included a fading corrected scan for better view of details in the photo. On the back is handwritten “Tin Shop of Joseph Benoit & Son, Seguin St., New Braunfels, Texas. In 1870, Joseph Benoit, a 30-year-old tinner from Alsace Lorraine, was living with the Ludwig Kessler family in New Braunfels, Texas. At the time, Joseph was single. By 1880, he was married to Gertrude Schlippes. In 1885, Benoit secured a patent for a windmill (see Portal of Texas History online). In 1900, he was still working as a tinner or tinsmith; by 1910, he appears to have been retired. A bicycle and a dog are also pictured.
