Very good condition. Handwritten captions on the sheets of paper and also captions on the backs of most. The photographs show the ruins of important buildings and city areas in Manila following the 29-day February 1945 Battle of Manila, during which American troops attempted to retake Manila from the Japanese. At the time city had been under a three-year very difficult occupation by the Japanese. The Japanese carried out a planned destruction which, in combination with American artillery, destroyed much of the city. 100,000 civilians were killed. One of the worst battles took place at Rizal Hall at the University of the Philippines; several photographs show the destruction there. Other buildings pictured include the Finance Building, the National Bank Building, the police headquarters at San Marcelino, the Quezon Bridge, and several churches.
