His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature remain popular and influential to this day, specifically his first and best known novel, his romantic adventure work 'King Solomon’s Mines'. 'The Wizard' like much of Haggard's work, is one of the many examples of imperialist literature produced in nineteenth century England, detailing the adventures of Reverend Thomas Owen as he seeks to carry out missionary work in south central Africa, specifically in the tribe of Amasuka. This novel, although fictional, provides an interesting study of the attitudes towards colonization and imperialism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
