Description: Antique ONE PINT ALE TANKARD Fine INTAGLIO STOURBRIDGE Wheel Engraved FRUITING GRAPEVINE Birds Floral WEDDING C1861 5”. There are two available at the time of listing. Don’t you just love the master class of making and wheel engraved glass from Stourbridge. This antique heavy and beautifully INTAGLIO engraved ALE tankard is a true gem for collectors. Its fine engraving features a beautiful fruiting grapevine with intricate birds just picking their fill at harvest time….and exquisite floral details, making it a perfect addition to any Breweriana collection. The tankard will have been crafted in the mid-19th century and has since been beautifully preserved and really great keepsake. I would think that the Flint glass (See notes below) tankard was made using wheel engraving in the STOURBRIDGE GLASS INDUSTRY CENTRE as the finest craftsmen were employed in this area of England. It is a great pity that this unique piece is not accompanied by any provenance, but its quality speaks for itself. This tankard is perfect for serving ale or any other beverage and is sure to impress collectors and enthusiasts alike. This finely engraved 19th century glass tankard has lightly tapering body and is engraved with a large elaborate wreath containing the names of the couple to be Wed…..Pattie & Jamie the body also features an applied handle. A large polished pontil completes the piece. The nostalgia alone in using such a wonderful old piece will enhance the whole experience of the beverage…. I have two of these identically engraved. There are very minor differences which is to be expected in hand tooled intaglio engraving. Such an art, and a fine tribute to the master engraver….of all those 160 or so years. AND…..joy of joy’s I have the other one which were have been made as a one-off special commission for the pair of newly-weds or soon to be Bride and Groom. I am listing them individually so you can choose to have just one or the pair. Like the song…. “YOU CAN’T HAVE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER”!! Please let me know if you require both before you buy and I can rearrange the postage etc. MEASUREMENTS: Height 5” x lip 3 5/8” x base 3 7’8” CONDITION: Perfect, mint condition with no damage, chips or scratches. These have been well looked after and show no sign of having been used. If you look at the magnified photos you can see feint wear around the base where the edge of the polished pontil mark is. RESEARCH NOTES: I have included an example of Stevens ad Williams intaglio cutting and also an other tankard for comparison. (Last two photos). Flint glass: Transparency Flint glass is known for its exceptional clarity and brilliance. It's made from carefully selected raw materials to produce a transparent, colorless finish. Density Flint glass is denser than other types of glass because it contains various metal oxides. Refractive index Flint glass has a relatively high refractive index, ranging between 1.45 and 2.00. Abbe number Flint glass has a low Abbe number, which means it has high dispersion. Flint glasses are defined as having an Abbe number of 50 to 55 or less. Flint glass is often used in glassware, decorative items, and packaging. It's also used in the optical glass industry to produce lenses and prisms because it absorbs much ultraviolet light but only a small amount of visible light. What does flint glass look like? Flint glass, also known as clear or crystal glass, is prized for its exceptional clarity and brilliance. Unlike other types of glass, which may contain impurities that give them a distinct colour, flint glass is made from carefully selected raw materials that produce a transparent, colourless finish.7 May 2024 https://www.sen5es.co.uk › post What Is Flint Glass? A Brief History | Blog | Sen5es Bottle and Jars What is the difference between flint glass and regular glass? Flint glass is denser due to the inclusion of various metal oxides and exhibits strong chromatic dispersion. Crown glass has an Abbe number> 50 and generally > 55. Crown glass is typically less dense resulting from higher usage of alkali metals and exhibits low chromatic dispersion. INTAGLIO CUTTING: Intaglio is a form of design/decoration where the picture is below the surface of the glass. This effect may be achieved by cutting away the glass to form the shape of the design, or by pressing the molten glass into a mold. It is the opposite of cameo glass, where the design is raised above the surface by cutting away the background. Intaglio cutting was a new style of cutting….It was a technique exploited to the full on coloured transparent glass in designs created by Frederick Carder and executed by Joshua Hodgetts and John Orchard at Stevens & Williams. Although also employed by Thomas Webb & Sons the technique was used by them more to enhance their rock crystal than to compete with S&W's coloured ranges. The technique and development of intaglio cutting in Stourbridge was described by John Northwood Il in his book "John Northwood. His Contribution to The Stourbridge Flint Glass Industry 1850 - 1902.".
