Description: Fresh out of a Maine estate art collection. Two c1830's theater engravings. Both framed, under glass. Each measure approximately 10 7/8" x 8 3/8", framed. One shows staining in margin area, other minor, all not affecting images. Goodspeeds Boston label on back of each. Please view photos as to type and condition. One titled, "Theatre, Walnut Street, Philadelphia". The engravers name on the lower right side reads, "Engraved and printed by Fenner & Sears Co.". The name of the artist the work is engraved from reads, " Drawn by C. Burton NY" (on lower left side). The print is marked at bottom, "London Published July 15 1831 by I.T. Hinton & Simpkins and Marshall. This structure is said to be the oldest continuously operated theater in the English speaking world and oldest in the US. It was built by the Circus of Pepin and Breschard which toured from 1807-1815. Pepein and Breschard constructed numerous venues in cities along the East coast of the United States. This theater was the first to install gas footlights in 1837. The theater has had several names thru the years ( The Olypmic, The Walnut Street Theater and The American Theater).
