Description: The Ladies' Wreath: An Illustrated Annual. Edited by Helen Irving. New York: J.C. Burdick, n.d., C. 1857, Twenty-Four plates total, twelve b&w, twelve hand-colored, red embossed cloth with gilt deco, 430 pp, 9 x 6", 8vo. In fair condition. Red cloth boards exhibit general soiling, causing rubbing to gilt deco. Boards are scuffed at edges & worn/bumped at corners. Heads and tails of spine collapsed - front hinge beginning to split at both head and tail as well. Rear hinge split - binding exposed. All edges gilt. Gift inscription found on front end-page. Front gutter split. Toning and foxing present, especially to plates and their tissue guards. Some tissue guards exhibit bent corners & off-setting from plates. Binding is intact, but fragile at hinges. Please see photos. Gift books, literary annuals, or keepsakes were 19th-century books, often lavishly decorated, which collected essays, short fiction, and poetry. They were primarily published in the autumn, in time for the holiday season and were intended to be given away rather than read by the purchaser. They were often printed with the date of the coming new year, but copyrighted with the actual year of publication. Plates present very well. Beautiful engravings and vivid colors.
