Description: "Eryngo" Plate 297 from "A Curious Herbal: Containing Five Hundred Cuts of the most useful Plants which are now used in the Practice of Physick" (1739) by Elizabeth Blackwell This 18th-century copper plate engraving (c. 1740) is hand-colored and illustrates the Eryngo (Eryngium) plant, Plate 297 in "A Curious Herbal" (1739) by English naturalist Elizabeth Blackwell. Blackwell not only created the original drawings, she also engraved the illustrations on copper plates and hand-colored the plates. Blackwell's prints, which she originally sold by subscription, were so popular, including in medical circles, that she was soon asked to publish them in book form. The result was "A Curious Herbal," featuring illustrations of 500 plants. Each illustrated plant in the herbal is accompanied by a text describing its appearance, medicinal uses, and other names by which it is known. Blackwell also engraved those texts herself. This framed print is accompanied by a certificate from the gallery/framer identifying it as "A Genuine Antique Print" and includes a photocopy of the text for the Eryngo plant from "A Curious Herbal." Antiqued gold wood frame with a hand-colored French mat. Condition: A few very small foxing marks to the paper, but in excellent condition overall. See photos.
