Pipes of the “Maitre Pipier” séries were crafted by Paul Lanier until he retired and after him by Alain Albuisson. Here is a beautiful and favorite line of mine to collect and offer. The Maitre Pipier line by the now closed down Butz Choquin. A select 2 people were chosen to hand craft and shape each in this top tier line of theirs as stated above. It is a line I avidly collect myself and keep several in my personal collection and one in my rotation and it smokes beautifully. This pipe is in wonderful condition and perhaps the largest I’ve seen from this line aside from big Calabash shapes. The only demerit of any note on this pipe, is the BC insert on the stem seems to have been replaced. Albeit, it’s done absolutely perfectly and I’m impressed. Instead of the BC, it’s just a black fitted circle that seats perfectly and you wouldn’t know without taking a light to it. Actually, the BC insert is not always on the stem for this line and others, so I’m not sure if it came that way or what but it looks great either way. This freestyle shape has a generous bowl and oval shank coming out in a very gradual taper to the saddle stem. The pipe is wrapped in beautiful flame grain all around with nice, tight birds-eye in the rim. There is some extremely minor inner rim darkening from use, but aside from that, the pipe is near mint condition and very clean, inside and out. It was well cared for and seems moderately or less so smoked. The ebonite stem has been hand polished to a very deep, shiny black with no oxidation, chatter or scratches and seats perfectly into the shank. The pipe was gently buffed with very fine white Diamond to remove any accumulations and shine the pipe up as well as bring out the original stain. I then applied a few coats of fresh carnauba wax in thin, stacked layers for a long lasting, durable and protective coating. It’s ready to smoke out of the box like all my pipes. - P - You get what you pay for. My pipes are all carefully inspected and attended to. I will put hours into a $30 pipe or a $500 pipe with the same attention and care. Even new, old stock pipes have factory mistakes, oxidized stems or need new wax.
