Description: IRONCLADS IN ACTION. A SKETCH OF NAVAL WARFARE FROM 1855 TO 1895 WITH SOME ACCOUNT OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BATTLESHIP IN ENGLAND. Wilson, H. W.2 volumes 357 & 310 PAGES, ILLUS, , MAPS A major naval study in which the author examines the development of the steam ironclad battleship and their early clashes in action towards the close of the 19th century. Introduced by Captain Mahan, the author describes the rapid development of the ironclad from the Crimean War and the attack and capture of Kilburn, on down to the 1890s, with an account of the MONITOR and MERRIMAC engagement and other early sea-fights during the American Civil War of the 1860s including the exploits and destruction of the ALBEMARLE and warfare against commerce raiders and blockade runners. These early encounters were watched with considerable interest by the maritime nations of the world, particularly Great Britain who as yet had little experience of modern battleship warfare. The Battle of Lissa, battles during the South American wars of 1865-1870, the Franco-German War, the Russo-Turkish War, the bombardment by British ironclads of the Alexandrian forts, French naval operations in Tunis and the East, the Chilean Civil War, Brazil's Civil War, actions off Asan and the sinking of the KOWSHING, the Yalu and its lessons, operations at Port Arthur and Wei-Hai-Wei and other sea-fights, are all examined and described in detail. Wilson also examines ironclad disasters, the development of the British battleship, and he attempts to predict a picture of future naval battles as the 20th century comes into view. Both volumes are profusely illustrated with photographs, maps, plans, diagrams, elevations and tables New Terms 2018 ************************************************************ THANK YOU FOR SHOPPING WITH US - WE VERY MUCH APPRECIATE YOUR BUSINESS. VINTAGE PAPERBACK BOOKS Please be aware that the binding glue in vintage paperbacks is likely to be much drier than newer books, and thus more fragile than more modern printings. SHIPPING TIMES WE HAVE NO IDEA HOW FAST THESE NEW RATES WILL ACTUALLY BE, SO PLEASE BE PATIENT. WE ARE EXPERIENCING 2 – 6 WEEKS AS BEFORE DEPENDING ON THE CLASS OF MAIL USED. Shipments inside the US are also experiencing massive slowdowns, please be patient. Media Sometimes is taking 1 to 4 weeks with no rhyme or reason as to why. IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST THE TIMES STATED ABOVE. PLEASE DO NOT START ASKING WHERE IT IS IN A WEEK OR TWO AND ACCUSE ME OF NOT SENDING THE ITEM - SLOW DELIVERY TIMES BY THE POST OFFICE ARE NOT MY FAULT, PLEASE BE PREPARED TO WAIT THE AVERAGE TIMES I HAVE STATED. ( Due to be budget shortfalls and massive job cuts, and projected closing of many distribution centers, that are being implemented by the US Post Office - we are already seeing delivery times longer than was seen previously – please be patient ) WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS & WE KNOW BY BITTER EXPERIENCE JUST HOW SLOW THE MAIL CAN BE.
