Description: Sixty-one items of correspondence dating from May 6, 1943 to December 14, 1943. 1. There are 52 letters from Josephine M. Eplich (Mrs. John Eplich), a mother in Bound Brook, NJ, to her son, Pvt. Jerome Merriman, who was undergoing training in the Marines in Florida. The original envelopes for five of those letters are included. The mother's letters date from May 6, 1943 to December 2, 1943. They are written on various sizes of paper and often have multiple pages. 2. There are eight letters from Merriman's girlfriend Jean written to him during his training in Florida. These letters date from September 28, 1943 to December 14, 1943. We don't have the original envelopes, so we don't know Jean's last name. 3. There is one letter from Merriman to his mother dated December 5, 1943. It is on the letterhead of the Naval Air Gunners School, Hollywood, Florida, and comes with the original envelope. From a forwarding notice on one of the mother's envelopes, it appears that Merriman started at the Air Gunners School in November 1943. This is a treasure trove of history from Bound Brook in World War II, referencing numerous local names and events. All the letters are in nice condition, and we believe they are all complete. The letters have fold marks from the original mailing. The envelopes are darkened and worn. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
