Description: Performer Notes: Boompa is a Vancouver-based label run in part by members of the fine indie pop group the Salteens, and Boompa, Vol. 1 is a label sampler from the summer of 2004. The lineup of artists touches on various levels of obscurity from the deep-down-the-well level that bands like Run Chico Run, Circlesquare, and Reverie Sound Review enjoy, to the "hey, I think I've heard of them" level of groups like Sparrow, the Salteens, and Seikden, to the legendary indie pop god level that the mighty Lucksmiths have achieved. Luckily for any indie lover bold enough to take a chance on the label and the disc, the level of quality ranges from nice (the Ladies and Gentlemen's laid-back '80s groover "Stay," Billy + the Lost Boys' romping "Whodini") to good (Kiddo's buoyant "This Could Take Forever," the Dirtmitts' "House Arrest") to excellent (the Lucksmiths' "Midweek Morning," the Salteens' "Time You Have Been Wasting"). Only Circlesquare's monochromatic synth poppy "Non-Revival Alarm" fails to impress. As a bonus there are two rare live Salteens recordings ("Budda Da"and "Home Again") as hidden tracks. Boompa is a label with a lot of promise and a solid ear for indie pop talent. This disc is proof of that and is a fun listen as well. ~ Tim Sendra Format: CD (1 Disc); Stereo Country: USA Studio/Live: Studio Release Date: 16 August, 2004 Label: Boompa Dimensions: 12.7 x 14 x 1.3 centimeters (0.06 kg)
