Bodied by Italian coachbuilders, Carrozzeria Touring (long story there) the #70 car captured the chequered flag in the 1st Gran Premio Brescia delle Mille Migliathe rebirth of the legendary Mille Miglia, which had been suspended due to a rash of wrecks in 1938. Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and, for 30 km or so, co-driver Walter Bumer, piloted the car to victory, with a 15-minute gap to the second-place Alfa. An unsanctioned driver swap between Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and co-driver Walter Bumer, allowed Bumer to drive across the finish line. Three BMW 328 roadsters placed 3rd, 5th, and 6th in the race, completing a milestone in BMWs history, and perhaps its greatest success in automobile racing.
