Description: Blue Hopi Corn15 Seeds This heirloom variety of corn was traditionally grown by the Hopi Indian Tribe in Arizona. This year was especially tough to grow corn in the Florida Panhandle. The extreme daily heat followed by weeks of no rain made most corn varieties bolt early. But the Blue Hopi Corn variety held out and tasseled just on time. The corn itself is an amazing color of blue. It's used to make fancy blue tortillas, chips or grits. This variety also has 30% more protein than other corn varieties. The most interesting thing we learned while growing the Blue Hopi Corn was actually how to plant it. We are true southerners and plant our corn in rows to be 'hilled' a few weeks later. No matter how much you care for the corn, out here the wind gets to it. Hopi Indians grew their corn in stand-alone circles spread throughout the land. One Hopi Indian was speaking about how they would sow the seeds 12" deep to protect from drought. Papa wondered, if you plant corn that deep - do you need to 'hill' it? If you plant corn in a circle - does the wind go around and not push it down? It was a total paradigm shift. Papa said "What if I have been planting corn wrong my whole life?" Needless to say, this test bed was planted in rows, but we will plant in circles from now on. We are still discussing the depth as 12" seems deep, but we will do a few at 12", 9", 6" & 3" to see. It's funny how we are always learning something new!!
