HistoryAncient magicians relied upon Black Tourmaline, that was known as Schorl, to protect them from earth demons as they cast their spells. The term Schorl was in use before the 1400s, it was named for a town in Saxony, Germany, where Black Tourmaline was found in nearby tin mines. There are Egyptian legends that speak of how Tourmaline made its journey from the center of the Earth and passed over a rainbow, taking with it all of the colors as its own. In the past the Romans used these stones for their relaxing properties of inducing tranquil sleep, calming the mind, and relaxing the body. In India, a likeness of Alexander the Great was carved in Tourmaline that dates to around the second or third century B.C., and in rituals of this culture, Tourmaline was used to provide direction toward that which would bring good and was believed to be a "teller" stone to provide insight as to who or what was causing trouble.
