While serving in the Royal Navy he visited Alexandria in 1818. In 1824, he met Joseph BonomiI in Rome, whom he hires to accompany him to Egypt. They stayed there from November 1824 until 1828, then, from 1829 to 1834, they registered the monuments and inscriptions, making a large number of architectural plans. His manuscripts are now mostly in the British Library, and many of his plaster casts in the British Museum. They spend a lot of time in Cairo where they carry out a large work of reconnaissance drawings and topographies, about fifty of them are in the British Museum They are unfortunately not as famous as David Roberts.
