Bertrand Arthur William Russell, (18 May 1872 – 2 February 1970), was a British philosopher, logician, essayist and peace advocate who penned a number of books and articles on the foundations of mathematics, logic and the theory of knowledge as well as analytic philosophy, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. Together with his former teacher, Russell wrote Principia Mathematica, a milestone in the development of classical logic and a major attempt to reduce the whole of mathematics to logic. Russell's works include The Principles of Mathematics (1903) and The Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell, 1903-1959.
