Superb Sanderling Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 January 2020 I agree so much with the previous review. This is a very special box of live recordings given in various locations. Interesting choice of music too and indeed the performances and especially the recordings are really excellent. all I would say is buy it and enjoy. There seems to be more Sanderling recordings coming to light now so long may that continue. Great Sanderling and Oistrakh Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 March 2015 This is a fascinating set made up of live performances ranging from 1966 to 2002. It also partially details the grand relationship between Sanderling and David Oistrakh who performed together so many times over a much longer period. the box contains - CD1 Shostakovich Violin Concerto 1 & Symphony 5 - 3rd October 1966 Metropoltheater Berlin CD2 Shostakovich Symphony 10 CONDUCTED BY DAVID OISTRAKH - 29 September 1972 Staatsoper Berlin CD3 Prokofiev Violin Concerto 1 & 2 (1 - 19 April 1971 Staatsoper Berlin) (2- 8 March 1965 Metropoltheater Berlin Stravinsky Violin Concerto 7 March 1967 Metropoltheater Berlin CD4 Beethoven Romance no 1, Schubert Symphony no 2, 8 March 1965 Metropoltheater Berlin both directed by Oistrakh. Wagner Tristan Prelude & Liebestod. 6 April 1970 Metropoltheater Berlin Brahms Haydn Variations 19 May 2002 Konzerthaus Berlin CD5 Beethoven Piano Concerto 4, Mitsuko Uchida, piano Schumann Symphony 4 - 19 May 2002 - Konzerthaus Berlin. These last three items (Brahms, LvB and Schumann) comprise Sanderling's last public concert. The sound quality on all is fine with almost no audience participation. All are stereo except the 1965 & 1967 items. Particularly important are the live performances of the Shostakovich symphonies. No 5 from Sanderling and no 10 from Oistrakh. Oistrakh also conducted this symphony in a live performance in Cleveland in 1968, having already performed the Brahms Violin Concerto in the first half under George Szell, he conducted the symphony in the second half. This is a very unusual and very fitting box set celebrating Kurt Sanderling and David Oistrakh. The performances are superb, the playing by the Berlin Symphony Orchestra throughout is splendid. This box set is highly recommended.
