CARDOZO - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 12/28/1928 - HFSID 281018 BENJAMIN CARDOZO Benjamin Cardozo wrote this letter in 1928, while still Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, to author and Zionist Elisha M. Friedman, about a talk they'd had: "I enjoyed greatly the talk we had the other day, and thought I had known you by reputation many years." Autograph letter signed "Benjamin N. Cardozo". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 3 pages, 5x6½, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Dec. 28, 1928. Addressed to Elisha M. Friedman, Esq. In full: "I was touched by your thought of me as expressed in the gift of the charmed little calendar left here this afternoon. I enjoyed greatly the talk we had the other day, and thought I had known you by reputation many years. I had not appreciated till then the range of your interests and breadth of thought. I am sorry to say that I have not yet brought myself over to the view that I ought to act as one of the judges in your proposed competition. I had meant to talk the matter over with Judge Lehman but to tell the truth I have been so crowded with many duties that I have not done so yet. I wish you much happiness in the new year. Faithfully yours,". ELISHA M. FRIEDMAN was an author and historian. He was also a Zionist and a member of several Zionist and Jewish groups. BENJAMIN CARDOZO (1870-1938) was Judge (1914-1926) and Chief Judge (1926-1932) of the New York Court of Appeals before being appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by President Herbert Hoover. He was sworn in on March 2, 1932 to succeed Oliver Wendell Holmes, who had retired at the age of 90. Cardozo, the second Jewish Associate Justice, served until his death in 1938 at the age of 68. He believed that the courts should not merely interpret the law but help create it, particularly in adapting it to changing social conditions. His Supreme Court career paralleled the New Deal's most innovative domestic reform activities, with Cardozo voting to uphold most of this legislation. Lightly toned and creased. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. See more material from these signers: ASSOCIATE JUSTICE BENJAMIN N. CARDOZO See more listings in our SUPREME COURT (646) category.
