Most likely a publisher's or printer's proof, it has been stored in climate-controlled conditions for over 25 years. The full sheet includes deckled edges on the bottom and right sides, as originally published. Minor, uniform toning consistent with its age. The colors are strong and unfaded, having never been exposed to direct sunlight. In good condition, with occasional minute fox marks in the right margin as pictured (visible upon close inspection), which could be covered by matting. The colors as pictured are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is warmer in person and the paper tone is more uniform. No signs of having been previously framed, with no hinge marks on the reverse. An overall very fine Laurencin print. Sold unframed. Would display even more beautifully with proper framing and matting. Marie Laurencin: Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) was a prominent French painter and printmaker celebrated for her ethereal and dreamlike portraits. She captivated the Parisian avant-garde with her delicate use of pastel colors, contributing notably to the development of Cubism and Surrealism. Laurencin's work, characterized by its poetic sensitivity and elegant compositions, remains a testament to her enduring influence on 20th-century art. Using muted pinks, dove grays, and mint greens the artist created dreamlike visions of reality. “Why should I paint dead fish, onions and beer glasses? Girls are so much prettier,” she once said. Born on October 31, 1883 in Paris, France, Laurencin like Pierre-Auguste Renoir studied porcelain painting in her youth. She attended drawing classes at the Académie Humbert before having her first solo exhibition in 1907. After falling into the circles of Pablo Picasso she became the lover of the famed poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Her close contact with the Cubists and Section d’Or artists such as Robert Delaunay and Jean Metzinger led her to develop her hallmark style of simplified volumes and arabesque lines. During her life she was a sought after portrait painter of notable Parisian celebrities including Coco Chanel. Laurencin died on June 8, 1956 in Paris, France. In 1983, commemorating the 100th anniversary of her birthday, the Musée Marie Laurencin opened in Nagano, Japan. Today, the artist’s works are held in the collections of the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg Framing Suggestions: Please make sure to have it framed with acid-free matting and a plexiglass frame with UV-filter. Please also ask your frame store to use acid-free hinging tape and preferably as little as possible. These are just my suggestions.
