Description: BEAUTIFUL Decorated Manuscript Leaf from Breviary ca. 1450-1500 Single leaf (page) from a breviary (liturgy of hours) circa 1450-1500. Hand printed and decorated on both sides, with beautiful decorated initial capitals. Measures about 4 3/4" x 6 1/4" (12 cm x 16 cm). Condition is very nice, as shown. Suitable for framing. We don't have documentation from our father's purchase of this item, but we asked a knowledgeable person and learned the following: This page is from a breviary that was likely produced in northern Italy, circa 1450-1500. It is clearly Italian based on the style of the script as well as the style of the decoration accentuating the red and blue initials. The text shown here preserves chants and readings for the celebration of Matins in the Divine Office of the Virgin, specifically as sung to commemorate the feast days of virgin saints. We cannot warrant the above, but it sounds reasonable. In any event, the beauty of this page speaks for itself -- see photos! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
