Description: Maker: Although this exquisite gold encrusted sugar bowl is unmarked, other pieces in the same china service have the word "Satsuma" written in red in Japanese hiragana lettering. The design and the quality of the porcelain suggest that it was made in Japan in the early part of the 20th century but that is not confirmed. Production of this type of Satsuma china began in the early 19th century, originating in the province of Satsuma, Japan, and later spreading to other cities. Design: The sugar bowl is classically designed and rich in detail. On each side are finely painted figures against a porcelain background accented in superb gold moriage and white beading. It is likely that this sugar bowl originally had a lid but even without it, the bowl makes a striking statement. Condition: Despite its apparent age, it's in excellent condition with no nicks, chips, cracks, scratches, stains, repairs or crazing. There is wear to the handles; it's visible in the photos. Size: The sugar bowl is 6 1/2 inches wide between the handles, 2 3/4 inches wide at the center and 3 1/2 inches tall at the top of the handles. It weighs 9.6 ounces. Please check all the photos very carefully – they are an important part of the description.
