The heat makes the tubing more pliable and, as the tubing cools, it forms a seal around each barb. This is true for ALL tubing barbs, regardless of use with air or water. Reading the reviews on the jungle site, it's very obvious many people have NOT done this. That probably why they have some leaks and, I highly suspect, what caused pump failures. Note: Rinse the expanded clay pellets before using them. This removes clay powder which can cause problems for the water pump. It's also a good idea to clean the clay pellets each season. You can easily find instructions for this with a basic web search such as, "clean clay pellets for hydroponics."
