Description: Battle of San Martino - July 24, 1859 - Italy Independence - Risorgimento - 1904: The second Italian war of independence is an episode of the Risorgimento. It was fought by France and the Kingdom of Sardinia against Austria from 27 April 1859 to 12 July 1859. It opened in April 1859 with the attack of Austria on the Kingdom of Sardinia which had not agreed to demobilize its army. It continued with a series of military victories by the Sardinian-French, including the battle of Magenta and that of Solferino and San Martino. The battle of Solferino and San Martino was fought on June 24, 1859, in Lombardy by the Austrian army on one side and the French and Piedmontese on the other. The two allied armies fought together and the Piedmontese formed the left wing of the array. However, post-Risorgimento historiography separated the action of the Piedmontese by isolating it as an event in itself, to which the battle name of San Martino was given. Today the unity of the event is recognized, although in Italy the name of battle of Solferino and San Martino remains. Elsewhere it is instead known as the Battle of Solferino . It is remembered in Italy as the first concrete step towards national unity. The war ended with the armistice of Villafranca and the defeat of Austria which was forced to cede Lombardy to France, which was then turned over to the Kingdom of Sardinia. The war caused the decline of the system of political interference of Austria in Italy. As a consequence, it led to the annexation by the Kingdom of Sardinia, as well as to Lombardy, of the territories ( Tuscany , Parma , Modena and Papal Romagna ) whose authorities left power to provisional pro-Piedmont governments. It also determined the most incisive phase of the Risorgimento ( expedition of the Thousand ), at the end of which the formation of the Kingdom of Italy took place (1861). This Undivided Back Era postcard commemorates the battle on Flag Day in 1904. This Undivided Back Era (1901-07) postcard is in good condition.
