Description: The main objective of this textbook is to expose the structure and methods of quantum mechanics in enough detail to provide the support required for all first degree courses in atomic, nuclear, or particle physics. At the same time, the treatment is developed in such a way as to prepare for a deep penetration of quantum mechanics in a postgraduate course. No previous knowledge of quantum mechanics is required and no great mathematical sophistication is assumed. The vector calculus and the solution of differential equations in series are the most advanced mathematical techniques used. At all times the steps in mathematical arguments are presented very fully and carefully, and recourse to unfamiliar mathematical arguments is avoided as far as possible. The approach is logical, more so than in any previous elementary book. In chapter 1 the reader is asked to accept seven basic assumptions, and no further adjustments are made to basic concepts in the treatment that follows. The author takes care to show the familiar classical mechanics as a limiting case. All important quantum mechanical results are illustrated by at least one physical example. Especially valuable is the unusually complete presentation, in tables and figures, of useful data for reference. Unusual, too, in an elementary book, is the inclusion of the quantization of the electromagnetic field. The presentation of the linear harmonic oscillator in an earlier chapter is carefully planned to facilitate an easy understanding of this topic.
