Description: Strayer’s involvement with the 506th began at the unit’s birth. He was one of its original officers, a captain, and was quickly promoted to the rank of Major and awarded command of the 2nd Battalion. A fanatical trainer of troops, it was Strayer that came up with the ‘hawg innards’ problem, as well as the long, Friday night marches. His trademark saying was “feed’em beans and mark’em duty.” Promoted to LTC, Strayer continued to hone the 2nd Battalion into a deadly fighting force. Strayer took part in the Normandy and Holland combat jumps and was elevated to Regimental Executive Officer during the siege of Bastogne. He was eventually promoted to Colonel before war’s end.
