Description: This is an aerial photo of a Russian / Soviet intelligence collection ship "Lira" CCB-516 (Balzam Agi class) taken November, 1985 off the Florida coast. The photo is in a lightweight metal/faux wood frame and is ready to hang. Photo condition is very good - no fading, tears, scratches or inscriptions. Photo and frame measure 14" x 11". Designated by the Soviets as Sudno Svyazyy (SSV, or communications vessel) the Lira was from the Azia class (Project 1826) and was among the first military vessels designed for intelligence collection and processing. Western reporting name for these ships is Balzam class. The force eventually numbered four such ships built by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. These intelligence collection ships were commonly seen at sea during the 1980s and early 1990s, monitoring major NATO naval exercises in the North Atlantic and also American carrier battle groups. However by the beginning of the 21st century only one was left in service with the Russian Navy was theBelomorye, based with the Northern Fleet. From smoke free storage.
